As previously announced in September, the Woods & Aitken LLP/Nebraska Building Chapter WEBINAR SERIES will be January thru March 2014 on selected Wednesdays.

The 2014 Series presenters will be Brian Koerwitz and Craig Dirrim, both attorneys at Woods & Aitken LLP. Brian Koerwitz practices Construction Law and Commercial Litigation at Woods & Aitken LLP. He has represented engineers, contractors, subcontractors, suppliers and public owners. He has prosecuted and defended payment and performance bond claims and has filed suit to foreclose numerous construction liens. Craig Dirrim practices Construction Law, Commercial Litigation, and Alternative Dispute Resolution at Woods & Aitken LLP. He represents private and public owners, architects, contractors, subcontractors, taxpayers, vendors and suppliers. Craig has been a presenter at several construction-related seminars, and he is the lead editor and co-author of Nebraska Construction Law (HLK Global, 2008).

2014 Webinar Series:

• Claims against Public Bodies. By failing to properly prepare and submit a claim, Contractors can lose their right to bring a claim against public entity. This program discusses governmental claim requirements, with an emphasis on the how, when, and to whom such claims should be submitted. Wednesday, January 22, 1:30-2:15 PM CDT

• Getting Paid on Private Projects. This webinar focuses on the money and addresses how contractors (and subcontractors) can best protect themselves from the risk of non-payment. We will discuss the contractual and statutory protections that exist, how to best utilize those protections and what steps to take when all else fails. Wednesday, February 12, 1:30-2:15 PM CDT

• Preventing and Defending Bond Claims. Nobody likes to pay twice, unfortunately that can and has happened. General contractors (and subcontractors) are sometimes required to post payment and performance bonds for a project. Occasionally, claims are asserted against those bonds by the project owner or by lower tier subcontractors or suppliers. This webinar will provide information concerning how best to head off claims before they happen, how to respond to potential claimants and how to deal with the surety once a claim has been made.
